Name:                                  Sishen, Kolomela and Thabazimbi mines

Company:                           Kumba Iron Ore

Commodity:                      Iron

Description:                      Sishen mine located near the town of Kathu in South Africa’s Northern Cape province is Kumba’s flagship operation providing the bulk of Kumba’s iron production and is one of the largest open pit mines in the world. Kolomela mine, is located near the town of Postmasburg also in the Northern Cape. Finally, Thabazimbi mine, is located near the town of Thabazimbi in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Thabazimbi mine has been in operation since 1931.

Reserves:                             As at 31 December 2013 Kumba has an estimated haematite ore reserve of 1.1 billion tonnes at an average unbeneficiated or feed grade of 60.1% Fe at its three mining operations. This is estimated individually as 864.1Mt @ 59.1% Fe at Sishen mine, 200.0Mt @ 64.4% Fe at Kolomela mine and at 11.3Mt @ 60.5% Fe at Thabazimbi mine.

Mining Method:             Both Sishen and Kolomela are mined by opencast methods and then transport the ore to the beneficiation plant where it is crushed, screened and beneficiated through dense media separation and jig technology. The jig plant at Sishen mine is the largest of its type in the world. Thabazimbi also mines using conventional opencast methods, but processes their ore through a single processing facility.
